Dell Inspiron 5100 (Domain Controller)

  • 1.8Ghz Pentium 4 CPU
  • 512MB RAM
  • 40GB HD
  • 100Mbps NIC

This old laptop serves as my Active Directory Domain Controller, it runs Zentyal Linux.

Almost all of my modern PCs authenticate to it as their primary domain controller. It also serves DHCP/DNS/PXE/TFTP for my Network OS Deployment server, and some minimal network storage (most of the network storage is handled by my Dlink DNS-321 NAS).

I really would like a much faster box as my PDC, but this is all I had lying around that fit the bill of small and low power consumption, I am trying to keep my network rack under 250 watts of power consumption.  Since it’s battery still holds about a 45min charge it essentially has a built in UPS, which is a plus.
